Jim Steg (1922 - 2001) was a master printmaker and an esteemed educator. A restless innovator, Steg mastered nearly every known printmaking technique – including photoresist etchings, serigraphs, woodcuts, and ink toner drawings – and invented some of his own. Over a career spanning more than half a century, Steg continually pushed the boundaries of his art to produce prints that firmly established him as one of the nation’s most innovative and exhilarating printmakers. Steg was also a beloved teacher who mentored hundreds of students during his 43-year tenure at Newcomb College. His work is included in the permanent collections of more than sixty museums and institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institution.
